Going High-Tech to See Into the Past: Scanning the Stratford Cemetery in Search of Graves and Other Clues

Presentation by Jarrod Burks, PhD.

All are welcome to this free presentation!

Jarrod Burks, PhD, of Ohio Valley Archaeology, Inc. completed a geophysical survey August 30 and 31, 2016 of the Stratford Cemetery on the grounds of the Stratford Ecological Center. Stratford is very pleased to have Dr. Burks visit the Ecological Center to review his amazing findings, research and methodology. His work is the foundation of the restoration of this private, pioneer cemetery with recorded burials from 1816 to 1888. Ohio is loaded with old 19th century cemeteries, some are well maintained or even still actively used, and others appear to have been reclaimed by the forest. Regardless of their current conditions, nearly every cemetery contains graves that are no longer marked. That’s where high-tech instruments such as ground-penetrating radar and magnetometers can lend a hand. In this talk I explore the results of recent radar and magnetometer surveys at the Stratford Cemetery, now part of the Stratford Ecological Center located south of Delaware, Ohio. Though past headstone readings have suggested that there may only be around 60 graves in the cemetery, our recent work indicates there could be over 100 graves. The geophysical survey results will be discussed in a wider context that includes the old town of Stratford, with its stone houses and nearby mills. Though no longer represented on modern maps (such as Google Earth), many components of the town of Stratford remain and are slowly being absorbed and transformed by the spread of urban development. The Stratford Cemetery, as the final resting place of many of the town’s former inhabitants, is an important part of the Stratford community.
